Burlington, Deception Pass and Orcas Island

Last weekend we decided to take advantage of spring break and the kids having school off to do a short trip. We drove up to Burlington, Wa which is a small town about 1.5 hours north of Seattle and happens to have a Marriott which means we could stay for free on my points. The above picture is taken from Mount Constitution on Orcas, Island.
Burlington is at the mouth of some interesting areas in Washington. It's just east of one of my favorite places called Deception Pass. There are lakes, a camp ground, the ocean and hiking trails there. What's not to like? Then there's a bridge across the pass that is very high. This is called deception pass because it looks deceptively easy to get through, but many a boat has failed to account for the current. This is the one outlet through which tidewaters flow from behind Bainbridge Island. So at times, the current is extremely fast like a raging river. We took the above picture on the middle of the bridge.
Later we hiked down to the water and skipped rocks and generally hung out. It's easy to get a sense for how fast the water is moving when you're right down close to it.
Lindsey had just been to the dentist to get her wisdom teeth removed so she didn't join us on this trip. We got a sense for what life will be like when Lindsey goes away to college next year. It was a bit lonely... Sniff...
