I had another patent granted last month. This is the 14th. There
are, so far, 11 more patents pending. It’s interesting that I don’t receive some
sort of official notification from the patent office or something. The only way
I find out is that Microsoft pays for a patent plaque and the company that sells
them sends me an email congratulating me on the patent grant and that the plaque
will arrive in the next month or so.
Anyway, this one was one of a few that never actually made it into the
product. Although the ideas drove some of the architecture and design with the
hopes that we could later implement the full capability, we never had time to
make it happen. The concept is that the runtime would automatically perform the
execute, measure, evaluate and optimize process that is generally done manually
by a subject matter expert to make the package run faster. It’s a cool concept
that is totally feasible. It would have been a very nice benefit to users, but
alas, ya gotta ship sometime!
