Skiing in Brighton

Well, we're back from our ski vacation at Brighton, Utah. We drove down last weekend and just got back this morning around 3am. (2-25-07)

We had people tell us the snow conditions weren't good. "Kirk's going rock skiing." But, the day we got there, a foot of puffy white stuff dumped and the slopes were great. We got about an inch of new snow almost everyday. The sun was shining most of the time, although, Friday, it was bitter cold and snowing like crazy. Saturday morning as we were leaving, there were lines of cars streaming back to Solitude.

Some cars were parked over the line on the side of the road and there was a sheriff there giving out parking tickets like santa and candy canes. On such a beautiful day, after having great fun skiing, those folks got a rude surprise. Some of them just an inch or two over the barely visible line. Probably wasn't even visible at the time they parked. Well, guess the city of Brighton has to make their money somehow... Grrrrr...

Anyway, while we were there, we had visits from family and friends. We were able to visit with Christines family at her parents home. It was a nice visit and we were glad to see Christine's brother Carl back from Iraq. Lindsey was able to spend the night with Jen Thomas at her BYU dorm. Sounds like they just hung out and watched movies. Julie brought up her kids and skied with Christine and our kids. Paul and Jane Newbold brought up their brood and some pizza that quickly disappeared. Ruth and Barbara came up as well. They know the way to our kids' hearts. They brought up a tub of red vines!

For my part, the vacation was a good time, but I really didn't get away like I wanted. I'm in the middle of building a new team at work and there were a lot of conference calls and email... I'm hoping to make up for it when Christine and I go to Zurich in April.

The kids skied more than ever before. Tyson hit the slopes every day. Lindsey got a lot of time in. Amanda did her usual. Jenny gets the ski bumb prize. Sarah had a cold and spent most of the vacation trying to get better at the cabin. Fortunately, on Thursday, she was able to spend most of the day on the slopes. She had a great time hanging on the bunny slope with mom and Jenny.

This vacation is the highlight of our winter every year. Staying in a cabin makes it so much easier to enjoy the time since there is so much flexibility. Sometimes we'd go out during the day, some would go back later for some night skiing and different groups could go out at different times. Finally, having one of the kids be sick doesn't mean everybody has to stay home.
